Good principles of sampling design and implementation apply to all types of surveys aimed at generating multi-country data, including studies such as ESS. What makes the sampling for such cross-national studies special is their requirement to generate data which are comparable across countries. Comparability is increasingly becoming one of the central dimensions of data quality. By comparability we mean that estimates for different populations can be put together, compared and interpreted in relation to each other in a meaningful way.
