Applications are now open for the Interdisciplinary Summer School “Location Matters" - Geospatial Methods for Health Scientists, Social Scientists, and Geoscientists, taking place 13–17 July 2026 at the University of Bremen (Germany). For researchers in educational research, geospatial data offers new opportunities to analyse spatial patterns of educational inequalities, neighbourhood effects, and regional disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes by linking information about students, families, or schools with characteristics of the places in which they live and learn. This allows researchers to study how local opportunity structures, school environments, socio-economic contexts, and access to educational resources shape learning conditions and educational trajectories. At the same time, many social scientists face practical hurdles when working with spatial data: finding suitable datasets, choosing appropriate spatial units and projections, linking spatial information to survey or administrative data, and addressing privacy or ethical issues when working with location-based data. The summer school addresses these challenges by combining methodological foundations, practical exercises, and interdisciplinary exchange. The summer school is primarily aimed at PhD students. Advanced Master's students and postdocs may be considered if seats are available. Participation is free of charge. Further information, the Call for Applications and the application form are available on our Summer School website. The application deadline is 4 May 2026.
