This thesis explores country-specific explanatory variables for eighth-grade student science achievement in Finland, England, Hungary, Japan, Latvia and Russia by multi-level modelling of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS 1999) data. These variables are presented in a new graphical form that facilitates interpretation of the results also by persons unfamiliar with multi-level modelling.
