French as a foreign language, French as a second language - in France

As in Germany, in France there is a distinction between "French as a foreign language" (Français Langue Etrangère - FLE) and "French as a second language" (Français Langue Seconde - FLS). In the field of education, people often talk about "French as a school language" (Français Langue de Scolarisation - FLSco). In the broadest sense, the definitions in France and Germany coincide in that FLE, like German as a foreign language (DaF), is characterized as general foreign language acquisition that does not necessarily involve living and everyday life in the country of the language. FLS/FLSco, on the other hand, like German as a second language (DaZ), assumes that the person who is acquiring the language will acquire it in the country of the language and will need it for their education and everyday life.
This dossier on French as a foreign and second language provides information on definitions of language acquisition in France, statistics on foreign language students, support measures, support programs, organisations and associations with a focus on language, as well as literature on the subject.
