“Biblioteca De Amicis“ was founded as Italy’s first child and youth library in 1971 in Genua following the example of the International Child and Youth Library in Munich. The library is acclaimed for its innovative activities, it promotes literacy and especially media and information competency. In particular, the library maintains many reading clubs for different age groups. Many libraries across Italy have implemented the project “Nati per Leggere“ (Born to Read), targeting children from birth to five years of age, and “Biblioteca De Amicis“ is also a successful participant. Afternoon readings are organised for other age groups, as well as reading clubs (e.g. “Il Circolo dei giovani lettori“ for children aged 10 -14 and “Club La lanterna delle fate“ for girls older than 14. “Biblioteca De Amicis“ cooperates with schools, offering regular visits for school classes and groups of teachers. Entire school classes can participate in reading promotion activities, and Biblioteca De Amicis hosts events with known Italian children’s books authors and illustrators. “Biblioteca De Amicis“ also highlights innterculturalism, perceiving the library as focal point from which you can travel to destinations all over the world. Apart from its multilingual stock, the library offers thematic events such as bilingual readings, workshops, fairs and drama, small feasts focusing on geographic regions, with special food, training seminars for teachers with experts in order to introduce particular cultures and customs, and foster integration of language groups and nationalities.
