Australia
The Centre for Youth Literature, State Library Victoria is Australia`s leading advocate on reading for teenagers. Established in 1991 as the `Youth Literature Program`, the Centre was originally based at the Victorian Writers Centre. The Centre for Youth Literature is now a fully integrated program and resource of the Library. In 2005, the name was abbreviated to the Centre for Youth Literature. CYL promotes recreational reading via a range of activities, information and strategic partnerships. The Centre currently presents an extensive annual program of innovative literary events, reaching between 6000 and 8000 young people a year and over 1000 adults working in the areas of youth literature education, literacy, libraries, writing, publishing and bookselling. As well, the Centre presents Australia’s premier youth literature conference, Reading Matters, on a biennial basis. This informs the professional development of educators, school and public librarians, publishers and authors. The Centre for Youth Literature is a part of the State Library of Victoria`s Learning Division. The State Library of Victoria is one of Victoria`s major cultural institutions, like Museum Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria and ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image). CYL receives program funding from the Australia Council to support writers. It also receives a small amount for funding through philanthropic trusts to support its regional program. They have also received project funding to run a boys` reading program, from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The homepage for teenage readers, www.insideadog.com.au is a project of the Centre for Youth Literature. The Centre also maintains the blog, Read Alert, with news of CYL activities and youth literature. CYL also works with all major and better independent book publishers in Australia.
