The European Research Council was founded by the EU as of 2007 in order to complement the FP 7 research promotion programme of ideas, it is investigator-driven and thus takes a bottom-up approach. Researchers are promoted if they prove to be excellent in science and technology, and prove themselves to be successful in a highly competitive programme. The ERC cooperates with national research funding bodies, and its website documents funding options and guidelines for application.
