"The General Teaching Council for Scotland is a statutory body, formally established by the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965. Its overarching role is the maintenance and wherever possible the enhancement of professional standards. All its activities are directed towards improving the quality of teaching in Scotland. The work of most of the Council's committees can be linked to some aspect of professional quality assurance and control".
