The Soros Foundation Moldova project "Internet for Moldova" has started in early 1995. The project appeared as a response to the under-developed telecommunication infrastructure in Moldova and several projects aiming on Internet connectivity coming from key Moldovan Universities. In the beginning of 1996 Soros Foundation Moldova sponsored the Academia network MoldNet was build and become functional. Four major academic institutions of Moldova have been interconnected: Academy of Sciences, State University Academy of Economic Sciences, Technical University. During the year 1997 many new users have been connected: Pedagogical University, Academy of Public Administration, 25 secondary schools, 40 NGO's and mass-media organizations. By the end of the 1998 the network included also the Co-operative Comercial University, the College of Informatics, the Medical University and several NGOs.
