The Aga Khan University's Institute for Educational Development (AKU- IED) aims to improve the quality of education in developing countries through research, educational programmes, capacity-building, partnerships, policy initiatives and a commitment to wider social development. Established in 1993, with grant support of US $ 12.5 million from the Commission of the European Communities, United Nations Development Programme, Canadian International Development Agency and Aga Khan Foundation, the IED is an integral part of The Aga Khan University functioning under its Charter. The IED extends and focuses school improvement efforts in Pakistan and other developing countries through co-ordination of its initiatives with the Aga Khan Development Network.
