  2. Adult education, social inclusion and cultural diversity in regional communities

    This article presents the outcomes of recent research into adult education programs and experiences in the Shire of Campaspe, a region in northern Victoria. Research data of people from diverse cultural backgrounds reveal how individuals can utilise adult education as a space to explore their own social and cultural isolation in a regional context. The research reveals patterns of migration, internal population mobility, social isolation and cultural identity within the context of this one regional shire. The article discerns the roles that adult education providers play in creating specific kinds of space for people to discover new social networks while interacting with informal and formal structures and processes of adult learning. Adult education programs and practices can play an important role in providing space for the exploration of social, cultural and economic experiences. However, individual adult education organisations manage their spaces and programs in such a way that excludes some people from social and economic activity crucial to the development of individual and community social capital. Adult learning policies, programs and practices in regional communities need to address the holistic nature of adult learning for people from culturally diverse backgrounds in order to contribute to the development of sustaining social capital for individuals, families and communities in Australian society.

  3. Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) 

    The AMEP (Adult Migrant English Program) is a national settlement program that provides English language tuition for eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants who do not have functional English.
    Functional English assists migrants to settle successfully in Australia and provides the basic language skills necessary to deal with everyday social and some work situations in English.
    The AMEP offers up to 510 hours of free English language tuition to eligible adult permanent migrants and humanitarian entrants.

  4. Approaches to cultural diversity in the Danish education system : the case of public schools

    This report shall discuss the relative absence of policies or even discourses, of multi- or intercultural accommodation in the Danish school system – particularly at a central level. It will also asses the important steps taken in recent years to address low achievement levels among migrant children – by any standard the most pressing problem, whatever one’s position on models of migrant inclusion. However, it will also question some of the ambivalences of these steps and the way that these reflect a specific Danish ‘take’ on migration management in schools. Finally – by way of conclusion – it will present some critical remarks on the paradoxes of a Danish public school system which, while understanding itself as the spearhead of egalitarian modernism appears to reproduce exactly the types of social differences and segregations most abhorred in Danish political culture.

  7. Building an Americanization Movement for the 21st Century

    This report is the culmination of more than two years of research into immigrant integration efforts across all sectors of society in the United States. The report provides an overview of successful integration initiatives observed in many sectors and prescribes recommendations to launch a coordinated national campaign—similar to past Americanization movements—to promote the assimilation of immigrants into American civic culture. The recommendations ... are actions that all sectors of society can undertake under a federal call to action. To renew an Americanization movement, state and local governments, community and faith-based organizations, businesses, adult educators, libraries, civic organizations, and the philanthropic sector must be partners to this strategy.

  8. Canadian and Austrian Integration Policy. The Correlation between Education and Economic Mobility

    The comparison between the Austrian and Canadian integration policy with a special emphasis on education will indicate both which policy is more efficient and better policy alternatives to enhance immigrant’s economic mobility. More precisely, it will suggest that immigrant incorporation is more successful in a country with a multicultural orientation on integration than in a country that applies an exclusionary integration policy. The analysis will start with an examination of the theoretical foundations of this thesis. We will discuss the outcomes and consequences of the two integration concepts “acculturation” and “multiculturalism”. In addition to that, we will examine three models of integration policy. Both models and concepts will be related to the case studies, as the thesis will provide an outline of the Austrian and Canadian integration policies. The following chapter will analyze three educational programs for immigrant incorporation in the school systems in Austria and Canada, namely remedial courses in the official language(s), intercultural learning (multicultural education in the case of Canada) and heritage language education. The next chapter will look at the economic mobility of the first and second generation of immigrants in both countries, as measured by education and labor market integration. Finally, the last part of this thesis will provide a comparison of the discussed integration policies, educational programs and economic mobility of people with an immigrant origin. It will determine which integration policy with its related educational programs is more successful in the incorporation of immigrants and verify the hypothesis.
