The report has been published annually since 2017. Each report has a focus topic and a "Country Scores" section that indicates how democratic countries around the world are considered to be. In recent years, there have also been increasing analyses of autocracies, which get compared to democracies. The V-Dem Institute (Varieties of Democracy Project) aims at conceptualising and measuring democracy. V-Dem distinguishes between five overarching democratic principles: electoral, liberal, participation, deliberation and egalitarian principles. It collects data to measure them.
