The research projects at BIFIE cover the whole school system. In detail, the federal institute has to fulfil the following tasks: 1. Quality advancement of the school system through innovative school projects, teacher education and the development of teaching materials; 2. Education monitoring (observation of the Austrian school system) including the development of education standards and conducting international achievement tests (e.g. PISA, PIRlS, TIMSS); 3. The development, establishment and evaluation of a school leaving exam at secondary schools based on standards and competences; 4. Applied educational research and counselling services for education administration; 5. Publication of the national report on education; 6. Information and advisory services for the general public.
