In accordance with the 2007 amendment of the Universities Act, in October 2008 the Council of Ministers authorized the creation of Universidad.es, the Foundation for the International Promotion of Spanish Universities. Universidad.es is a public sector foundation that aims to promote the Spanish university system throughout the world. The foundation was set up by the Spanish government with the support of Spain’s regional governments and of the universities themselves, on 23 December 2008, when the first meeting of its Board of Trustees was held. It began its operations in February 2009. Its main objectives are to increase the international dimension of the Spanish university system, to establish Spain as a leading destination for foreign students and researchers, to increase the presence of Spanish students and researchers throughout the world, to encourage transnational education under the leadership of Spanish universities and to help universities to develop their internationalization strategies and to promote university development cooperation projects.
