Literacy Aotearoa - english information
New Zealand
“Literacy Aotearoa“ is an organisation dedicated to promoting and monitoring developments in adult literacy and numeracy skills. “Aotearoa“ means “New Zealand” in Māori, the official national language next to English. The organisation endorses a holistic approach to literacy, encompassing basic educational skills in reading and writing, numeracy, cultural awareness and critical thinking. A network of many organisations in the field of adult literacy is active across the entire country, acting at local and regional levels, providing for basic education in diverse settings including workplaces, communities or prisons. “Literacy Aotearoa“ provides users with information regarding literacy education in their country, but the website also offers newsletters, a calendar of events, and studies as well as quality guidelines and regulations. “Literacy Aotearoa“ also delivers customised literacy trainings at the workplace. The TEC Workplace Literacy Fund supports these programs. TEC is the Tertiary Education Commission, acting on behalf of the government. The Workplace Literacy Fund supports employees in their ability to meet workplace demands on their literacy. “Literacy Aotearoa“ offers trainings to tutors in adult education, and the website also lists links to research studies, current directives and resources.
