Literacy programmes for adults: what can we expect?

[This contribution] provides some general personal reflections on the challenges facing adult literacy programmes by someone who has worked for more than 30 years in the field and now lives and works in Mozambique. Her observations on such issues as the gender question, literacy and poverty, and the various agendas behind literacy programmes make interesting reading, and her common-sense approach is refreshing.
