The University of Konstanz, with its "Institutional Strategy to Promote Top-Level Research", has been receiving continuous funding since 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments.
The Zukunftskolleg is a central scientific institution of the University of Konstanz for the promotion of young researchers in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and is an integral component of the institutional strategy Model Konstanz Towards a Culture of Creativity. The Zukunftskolleg forms a platform for interdisciplinary discourse between distinguished researchers in Germany and abroad, and provides them with resources for obtaining extramural funding.
The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz offers up to five
Zukunftskolleg Bridge Fellowships (any discipline represented at the University of Konstanz) (Salary Scale TV-L 13)
to develop and implement individual research projects.
The positions are available between 1 March 2017 to 31 October 2017 for a maximum of eight months.
This funding instrument follows three different aims:
To contribute to the structural development of the University of Konstanz, by financing postdoctoral fellowships for new research initiatives at the University, which are in the process of formation (e.g. collaborative research centers, research groups).
To enhance and develop existing research strengths of the University, by supporting postdoctoral researchers with distinctive and complementary research expertise, who can fill niches in ongoing projects.
To support threatened foreign researchers by giving them the opportunity to be integrated into the German academic system.
In this way the Zukunftskolleg will increase the focus on specific subject areas at the University and strengthen the position of junior researchers within these initiatives. Applicants are expected to comply with at least one of the above mentioned aims.
The Zukunftskolleg provides a professional infrastructure and an appropriate workplace for conducting research. Fellows have the opportunity to benefit from a variety of career development measures, including the University of Konstanzs Academic Staff Development and Research Support offices. Each Fellow is a member of both a university department and the Zukunftskolleg as an Associated Fellow.
Applicant Requirements for this Bridge Fellowship include:
Candidates must be in possession of a doctoral degree (PhD thesis submitted and defended) at the moment of the decision;
Applicants must propose a research project that ties in with a discipline represented at the University of Konstanz (max. 5 pages);
A letter of support from a Professor at the University of Konstanz, who is specialist in the field of study relevant for the applicants project and will act as a Local Host during the fellowship. The letter should present the long-term prospects of the project beyond the Bridge Fellowship;
A letter of motivation (max. 1 page);
The curriculum vitae and a publication list;
A writing sample (max. 30 pages).
Fellows have an opportunity to teach. They are expected to participate actively in the regular weekly meetings of the Zukunftskolleg.
Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic excellence, the quality and topicality of their research project outline, personal aptitude with regard to leadership and team skills, and interdisciplinary interest.
The applications will be discussed and evaluated by the Executive Committee of the Zukunftskolleg and the Committee on Research (Ausschuss für Forschungsfragen AFF).
