This year`s NECE conference refers to dramatic changes in European cities: Migration and mobility reduce the cohesion within many urban societies. Cities have become complex entities in which ethnic, social and cultural segregated communities have developed. Big scopes for individual life designs and collective ways of living are often linked with a growing disparity and conflicts of identity and self- assertion. At the same time cities develop the breeding ground for new, mostly cultural expressions of civic participation in order to create new forms of public spheres or civic involvement. The city mirrors social challenges and becomes a lab of cultural and social developments in which questions of economy and work, of social belonging and recognition, of cultural self-perception and external perception, of political participation and justice are renegotiated. Cultural and citizenship education have to reposition themselves, since forms of participation and development opportunities become existential issues in cities - not least for the cities themselves. The conference will discuss challenges of current urban developments from an interdisciplinary perspective and determine opportunities of cultural and citizenship education in the context of urban development.
