A Bridge Too Far? Teaching Common European History Themes, Perspectives and Levels. 17th EUROCLIO Professional Training and Development Conference

22.03.2010 - 28.03.2010

to be announced at the Conference website
Nijmegen Link

The Conference theme is a result of the recent developments in Dutch and European History education. Within this theme we will be looking at the following key questions:

- Is there a common desire for a European History Canon?
- What would be the topics of such a European History Canon?
- Will these European History topics be approached from a local, regional, national, European or global perspective?
- How will these topics be taught in primary, lower- and upper secondary schools?
- How can we learn from each other? Discussing and constructing examples of ¬Ďgood practice¬í
- How will common European History Education contribute to the development of active and conscious citizens in 21st century Europe?

During the Conference, five time periods will be highlighted in lectures, workshops and on-site study visits:
- Roman Times
- Christianity and Islam
- Industrial Revolution
- Second World War
- Cold War and beyond

A series of activities can be expected: lectures and workshops from national and international experts, school visits in Nijmegen, on-site museum education and a Second World War Battlefield Tour, which will take us to Dutch and German memorial sites.
