A Workshop by Dr. J. Douglas Willms on Statistical Modelling including Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) and Growth Trajectories. The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with analytic techniques appropriate for analyses of hierarchically structured data, such as data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). The first two days (May 28-29) will be devoted to the basic ideas and applications of hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) including topics such as: Why HLM instead of Ordinary Least Squares Regression? The basic two-level model (e.g. students nested within schools); Examining residuals at the first and second levels; Estimating the effects of group-level characteristics (e.g. school effects); Three-level hierarchical models (e.g., students, schools, countries); Two and three-level logistic regression analyses. A maximum of 30 participants will be enrolled in the workshop.
