The objective of this international conference is to assess the state of medical education within the Bologna Process in Europe and in Germany. In this context, several pertinent EU projects on curricular reform will be examined. How or whether to reform medical education, regarding the need for further development of respective state guidelines are issues of intensive debates in Germany. But the discussion must take into consideration the developments in other European countries as well – especially since the debates have been triggered in the context of the greater Bologna Process. The conference shall also demonstrate, as one of its learning effects, that special “national solutions” are not the solution, especially in the long term, as they tend to make mobility and mutual recognition in the Common European Higher Education Area more difficult. Selected examples of “Good Practice” from Bologna countries will also serve to provide more transparency, increase awareness for necessary changes and promote the feasibility of two-tiered study programmes for Medicine in Germany and Europe. Nevertheless, “Bologna” is more than restructuring curricula into Bachelor and Master. There are a number of requirements for the successful implementation of the Bologna Process in medicine – with or without tiered study programmes. These include the critical review of state guidelines, medical curricula and the introduction of new teaching and learning formats as well as strengthening further research competencies. In Germany, such attempts have already been made by the medical curricular reform as well as the reform of the Licensing and Regulation for Doctors (2003). In addition, Bologna also encompasses the establishment of efficient quality assurance, the improvement of mobility and recognition, and, in the context of medical education, discussion on labour market opportunities for Bachelors of Medicine. Target groups for the conference include teachers, academics, students, representatives of European medical associations, research organisations, national and regional health ministries, EU Commission, representatives of medical employers, health and care companies, and the interested public.
