![]() | The German Education Server - The Internet Guide to Education in Germany |
The Deutscher Bildungsserver (German Education Server, or better Eduserver) is the focal internet guide to education related information on the internet. It provides fundamental and high quality information on internet resources to all those concerned – thus offering quick, up-to-date, concise and free access to information. As a meta server it primarily refers to resources on the German education system, which are mainly provided by the federal (Bund) and state (Länder) authorities, the European Union, higher education institutions, schools, state institutes, scientific societies, media providers and libraries. The German Education Server is a joint service by the federal government and the states.
Apart from research options in several data bases, the information pool can be accessed via two structured types of entry: subject catalogues and target groups.
The subject areas cover all levels of education, from early childhood education and care to primary and secondary school and vocational education and training. Moreover, they cover higher education, continuing and adult education and science and educational research. These subjects are supplemented by general information such as overall descriptions on the German education system, education policy, statistics etc., and cross section information, such as special education and social pedagogics, media and education and education worldwide.
The service for the target groups contains selected and structured information for education administrators, professionals in child care, parents, teachers, pupils, trainers, apprentices and trainees, students, target groups in adult education, (education) scientists and academics, special education professionals and social pedagogues.
Special sections
Up to date information, journalist articles and context materials concerning selected special interest topics can be found in the sections Presseinformationen (press information), Bildung Plus (Education Plus), Dossiers, Tipps der Redaktion (editors’ tips), Zeitungsdokumentation (newspaper articles), the calendar of events and competitions, and Neue Onlineressourcen (new online resources). Please note that most of these categories are only available in German.
Services
Users can keep informed about new items on the German Education Server or their special interests by a biweekly newsletter, the personal profile service “Mein Bildungsserver” (my eduserver), and the RSS Newsfeed. These and the following services are currently only available in German. Moreover, users can search for a job or post an application in the job exchange, Jobbörse Bildung, which is operated in co-operation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft (German Society for Education Science). The glossaries offer definitions of the German education system and its European dimension in German, French and English. The option “Ask the editors” offers a research service.
Search Options
A substantial data pool is available for research on the Education Server, e.g. the data bases Onlineressourcen (online resources), Institutionen (institutions), Personen (persons), calendar of events, and Wettbewerbe (competitions). The bibliographical data bases provided by the Fachportal Pädagogik, the subject gateway to education science, are also integrated into the search. The portal offers access to the central data base on education related literature, the information system FIS Bildung. A simple search option enables users to search across the whole data base, while an advanced search option (in German) also allows for the selection of particular data bases.
Suggesting a Link
Users can suggest interesting institutions, online material, web sites and events by activating the button Suggest a link (in German). All entries are checked by the editorial team, and then added to the data bases. The event calendar entry is also accessible in English and French.
International Visitors
International users are offered a short overview in several languages, the central site headlines of the Eduserver are available in English.
SchulWeb
SchulWeb (Schoolweb) is a special service by the Eduserver, it is specifically designed for teachers and pupils. As a platform for communication, it arranges contacts and project partnerships between schools and it supports communication via chats and a forum. The SchulWeb gateway contains the most comprehensive data base of German schools both at home and abroad with their own websites. Moreover, further school related services and projects such as school magazines, school radios, resources and school trips are presented only in German.
The gateways Bildung PLUS and Lesen in Deutschland
The co-operation network of the Eduserver includes the internet gateways Bildung PLUS (Education Plus), which focuses on aspects of education reform, and the online magazine Lesen in Deutschland (Reading in Germany), which is published by order of the federal and state authorities. It offers resources and articles on the promotion of reading skills in German beyond the realm of schools.
Further Information
You can find further information on the structure, function and organisation of the Eduserver in the sitemap, in the section “How the Eduserver works” and the Imprint. The staff of the Eduserver will be pleased to deal with your suggestions, criticism or questions. Please send us an email!
