In 1999, in connection with the restructuring of the Faculty of Philosophy, the former Institute was subdivided into the Department of Special Education and the Institute of Special Education.
The Department is responsible for the research and the academic courses in the field of special education (school and extra-school). The responsibility for all courses of studies leading to a diploma that qualifies for professional capacities is delegated to the Institute of Special Education.
Thus the Department is in charge of the academic formation leading to the Master`s degree in special education and the Doctor`s degree, whereas the Institute is responsible for the formation qualifying for professional capacities (Bachelor`s and Master`s degree).

The following certificates can be acquired:
diploma in special teaching (school) (MA), diploma in remedial and special education (extra-school) (BA), diploma in speech and language therapy (BA), supplementary diploma in early intervention for children with special educational needs.
