The module aims to give a brief overview of European/German migration policy and the civic integration course (Orientierungskurs) in Germany. The goal is to teach students to critically reflect on the course material and generate their own ideas about what can help with integration. It should also enable students to transfer critical reading to other types of media (for example, school textbooks). The course module offers students the chance to learn about and debate a current and controversial issue that affects society. Although concern with Germany’s public position as a ‘country of immigration’ has, at least since 2000, abated, and the populace has generally accepted this as fact, the issue is far from resolved. Many elites, politicians and the general public are unsure of which precise measures will foster societal cohesion. Given the often discussed notion of ‘integration’, it is important for students to learn what the integration programme, designed to help further this process, entails. Beyond politicians and interested stakeholders, few people in German society are aware that the integration programme exists, let alone what it demands and how it supports immigrants.
